Ecosystem & community projects
Official Coding Tools MCP projects and community-maintained downstreams, integrations, and experiments.
Coding Tools MCP is intentionally a small, model-neutral runtime. That makes it useful as a base for other projects: desktop shells, personal-workstation distributions, alternate transports, agent integrations, and specialized workflows can build on the same core ideas without needing to live in the upstream repository.
This page separates official projects from community-maintained projects so it is clear what the Coding Tools MCP maintainers support directly.
Official projects
These projects are maintained under the Coding Tools MCP project:
- Coding Tools MCP Core — the canonical runtime, protocol behavior, PyPI package, npm launcher, schemas, tests, and release contract.
- Coding Tools MCP Desktop — the official desktop application for configuring and running Coding Tools MCP.
- Documentation — the source for this documentation site.
Community projects
Community-maintained. The projects below are not officially supported, security-reviewed, or release-tested by the Coding Tools MCP maintainers. Their behavior, compatibility, and security model may differ from upstream. A listing here is informational, not an endorsement.
Downstream runtimes & workbenches
Coding Tools MCP Workbench
biaobiao2233/coding-tools-mcp-workbench
A downstream workbench focused on trusted personal workstations. It explicitly preserves the upstream Apache-2.0 lineage while extending the runtime with substantial Windows, concurrency/resource-leasing, reviewed host access, project-continuity, and local Agent Transport work.
It targets a more opinionated personal-workstation runtime than the upstream project's smaller, model-neutral core boundary.
Coding Tools MCP — Desktop / Node downstream
A community downstream that has evolved into a larger workstation product with a Rust + Tauri desktop client, a portable Node Agent, a shared Svelte management UI, persistent workspaces, skills/hooks/external-MCP management, Windows Computer Use, and multiple tunnel options.
It is substantially more integrated than upstream and should be evaluated as its own distribution rather than assumed to match the upstream runtime contract or release cadence.
Building on Coding Tools MCP
If you are building something on top of Coding Tools MCP, you do not need to fork the whole project. Common patterns include:
- an MCP-aware desktop or terminal UI;
- a specialized agent workflow that uses Coding Tools MCP as its execution layer;
- an alternate transport, tunnel, or deployment wrapper;
- a platform-specific distribution;
- an integration for a particular editor, model host, or developer workflow;
- a downstream runtime with deliberately different product boundaries.
For integrations that only need the runtime as a dependency, prefer using the published package or MCP endpoint and keep your project independently versioned. Fork when you intentionally need to change runtime behavior.
Add your project
Community projects are welcome.
Open a pull request against coding-tools-mcp/docs and add your project to this page. Please include:
- the project name and public source URL;
- a one- or two-sentence description of what it adds or changes;
- whether it is an integration, wrapper, distribution, or downstream runtime;
- a clear statement of its relationship to Coding Tools MCP;
- for derivative code, the appropriate license and attribution required by the upstream Apache-2.0 license and NOTICE.
Listings should describe what a project actually does and avoid implying official support.
Compatibility expectations
The authoritative upstream behavior remains the runtime contract, tool schemas, and current upstream release notes.
Community projects may intentionally diverge. Before switching to a downstream project, check its own documentation for:
- supported MCP protocol versions;
- tool catalog and schema differences;
- workspace and command-security boundaries;
- authentication and public-network behavior;
- release cadence and upstream merge policy.
